Ontario - Pharmacists authorized to refill prescriptions, remuneration for Pharmaceutical Opinion Program outlined

Effective March 15, 2011, pharmacists practicing in accredited community pharmacies in Ontario are authorized to refill prescriptions under select conditions.
Effective April 1, 2011, pharmacist remuneration for the Pharmaceutical Opinion Program will be determined. The Pharmaceutical Opinion Program has three billable services for patients covered under the public Ontario Drug Benefit program:
- Identifications of concerns with new or refill prescriptions resulting in a consultation with the prescriber and refusal, fill or modification of a prescription.
- Medication follow-up consultations with the patient to check that the medication is being tolerated and is working.
- Medication compliance verification with the patient to confirm compliance when records suggest otherwise (e.g. late refill).
