Key Legislation and Policy Dates

  • Effective March 4, 2011, pharmacists in Saskatchewan received expanded prescribing authority to extend refills and provide emergency supplies of prescribed medications.  Press release from the Ministry of Health here: http://www.gov.sk.ca/news?newsId=8fdd32e2-a63b-43a1-b480-5b54be396516
  • May 1, 2011 - To offset the decreased income from generic scripts, the maximum dispensing fee increased to $9.85 on May 1, and will increase to $10.25 on April 1, 2012.
  • June 1, 2011 - Most existing generic drug prices will lower to 45% of the brand drug price by June 1, and further reduced to 35% by April 1, 2012. New generic drugs will be introduced at 40% of the brand drug now, lowering to 35% of the brand price by April 1, 2012.
  • As of July 2011, pharmacists are permitted to assess and prescribe via Level 1 minor ailment prescriptive authority for acne, cold sores and insect bites.  A total of fourteen conditions have been approved by the College of Pharmacists Council for Minor Ailment Services. http://www.skpharmacists.ca/media/50509/special%20edition%20minor%20ailments%20(52).pdf
  • Effective February 1, 2012, pharmacists are remunerated for assessing patients for approved minor ailments, resulting in a prescription drug. http://www.skpharmacists.ca/default.aspx?whatsnew=updated-special-edition-pas-it-on-52
