Bill 41, which aimed to increase pharmacists’ professional responsibilities, was adopted unanimously by members of the Quebec National Assembly on December 8.
The bill stipulated that the Quebec Order of Pharmacists, in collaboration with the Quebec College of Physicians and the Office des professions [a provincial agency dedicated to public protection in professional services], could change their regulations to allow members to extend and adapt prescriptions, treat certain minor conditions, order and analyze lab tests, and administer medication for the purpose of instruction.
One amendment was introduced during the November 29 consultations organized by the parliamentary commission on health and social services.
This amendment specifies that pharmacists can substitute a prescribed medication with another medication of the same therapeutic sub-class only during widespread inventory shortages across Quebec.
